USS Narwhal (SSN-671), a unique submarine, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the narwhal, a gray and white arctic whale with a unicorn-like, ivory tusk. Her keel was laid down on 17 January 1966 by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation, in Groton, Connecticut.

Narwhal was a one-of-a-kind submarine built under Project SCB 245. Very little of her design was based on the current Sturgeon-class submarine (her identification during construction as a Sturgeon-class submarine may have been an attempt to hide her unique features). Her power plant, engine room, and forward compartment were unlike any other submarine in the United States. The crew had more usable space and berthing forward of her reactor compartment than her Thresher/Permit, Sturgeon, or Los Angeles-class near-sisters. Two distinct reactor tunnels, each with its watertight doors, offered access aft. Her engine room was large and well-organized.

Although several of Narwhal's propulsion improvements were copied by other ship classes, particularly the Ohio class, no other submarine employed all of her breakthroughs. Among the innovations were:
A reactor with natural circulation.
The reactor coolant pumps were small and had two speeds: on and off.
Condensing of seawater injection scoop (which was one reason why she remained a unique submarine: despite the quieting advantage the scoop piping violated the simultaneously developed SUBSAFE rules and so was never repeated).
Cross-connection of main and auxiliary seawater systems.
The main engine turbine was a clever multi-stage direct-coupled turbine that minimized gear whining. Because of the complicated warm-up and cool-down operations, the turbine layout was not deemed successful.
The waist ballast tanks were removed, which reduced the vibration noise caused by the thin outer hull.
The sail was moved aft from the bow-hull discontinuity, which reduced flow noise.
As a result, she became the quietest submarine of her time.

Just forward of her rudder, Narwhal was fitted with a "turtleback" structure that may have been used to house remote-controlled underwater vehicles or an experimental towed sonar array.
